Ruby on Rails Tutorial is a great book as it helped me understand how a rails application works. I am teaching myself how to code with books and online tutorials. Prior to the book I followed online tutorials on how to build simple apps, but I didn't fully understand WHY stuff worked. Or as many people call it, the "Magic" that rails produces. Now I have a much better understanding of rail's MVC (Model View Controller).

Learning how to code on my own has been tough. There is a wealth of knowledge in the book. I read the book once, which enabled me to have a good understanding of how a rails application works. Then I worked on my project. When I came to road blocks I returned to the book. I even read the book a second time to better master the material. This book has been very beneficial.

Truly a great, all inclusive tutorial to getting started in web development, utilizing the Rails platform. Useful even if you aren't planning to work with rails. This is the best guide/tutorial I've ever worked with.

Definitely one of the best, most comprehensive, and easy to follow tutorials out there. It even has its own service on Cloud9 so you can do everything easily in the browser! Takes you through the steps of creating a twitter clone. I did it twice it was so good! Once to learn the workflow and the next to get in with the code. Highly recommended for someone looking to get into Rails development.

There are explanations as you go and a step by step guide to follow.
I think this book is recommended reading for anyone learning Ruby on Rails.

This is what I used to start my journey in Ruby on Rails web development. This is a very complicated subject, and it would be all too easy to get either lost in the weeds or confused by high-level abstract concepts. However, this book threads the needle perfectly. You get to understand why you're doing things, but you also see exactly what it is that's going on from a technical standpoint. I was never left wondering, "well, but a pro wouldn't do it this way, right?" Hartl makes sure that everything you build with him is of production quality, so you can directly use what he teaches you. I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking to get started, and I still occasionally go back to the sample app we built to jog my memory on the best way to do something.

This is an excellent way to start your journey with Rails development.
Once I started with this book I just couldn't stop. The examples are good and the author does a really great job explaining the concepts of Rails development.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn Rails development. Really wish that I started using Rails years ago!

This is a great book that introduces all facets of Ruby on Rails development. It also introduces Test-Driven Development, which many other tutorials neglect. I highly recommend this book; it should be read over and over again.

I am currently doing the tutorial for free using the online version of the book. I'm halfway through Chapter 10, and I've learned a bunch. The explanations are very good, and I often find that my naturally arising questions are addressed just after I ask them. My only complaint is that the author references previous and future code listings A LOT. Having all of those links is sometimes useful, but for the most part it's distracting and I find I can get through the material more quickly and with better understanding if I read the sentences as if they didn't exist. That aside though, I still think it's the best place to start learning Rails. If you decide to use this tutorial, you won't regret it.

I've read the second edition and this edition of the book and by far it's the best for a beginner in Rails to learn. The book walks you through the best practices with not only rails but Github integration, Heroku deployment and coding styles and best practices for rails development. Michael Hartl is an incredible teacher and I highly recommend this book if you are trying to get started with this incredible framework.
