I am a Web Developer and when I wanted to learn Ruby on Rails I did a few tutorials in different websites, until I discovered this diamond. This book and its e-version are my companions and the reference for my current work. I believe is the best and most complete source to start learning Rails and reach an advanced level fast. It is highly recommended to other fellow programmers.

I read it and I simply loved it. Comming from ASP.Net and knowing nothing about MVC I felt that my mind was blown away. I really liked how the author described all the chapters and all the details he showed.

I wrote all the code of the book and made it with VIM just to get the feeling and to memorize all that I read. I truly enjoyed all the philosophy of Rails, the test framework, the LESS, IRB, the richness of Rails, everything was beautiful and I finished in 1 month all of it. I work all day however I spent very late at night just to get the hands on the keyboard and read and type all the exercises.

I trully recommend this book to begginers and even experts, it's very well written and explained.

Thanks Michael, it was (and still is) an amazing journey.

Best Ruby on Rails tutorial that I have read or followed through. You do need to have some experience working with MVC patterns to get the most out of the book. Great examples and pretty straightforward to follow through. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to solidify their Ruby on Rails foundation.

There are real benefits to adapting your workflow and code to leverage the power of Rails but, being a large and opinionated framework, it can be a bit intimidating when you are just getting started.

This book is an excellent resource - very clear and detailed - and it will help you get started with Rails the right way.

The best programming tutorial/guide I have ever read. I wish all guides/tutorials followed this format.
From the START Michael teaches you how to write production ready code, while teaching you tools you will need like git.
No "Todo" apps here. You work your way though making a mock-twitter website with a real database and a real server.

This is the seminal tutorial for would be Ruby on Rails developers.  It has been carefully crafted to be the perfect learning experience - incremental and accurate, with tangible results.  Hartl goes to great lengths to ensure the content is clear and provides a lot of great background material as well.  This is a daunting undertaking as Rails requires the neophyte to learn a lot of related technologies (front-end, back-end, environment, testing, etc).  Hartl is careful to ensure a rich and meaningful learning experience, while keeping the dinosaurs in the park at all times (some alert readers will recognize the source of Dr. Malcolm's "God help us, we're in the hands of engineers", but I digress).

Even months after working through it, I still frequently refer to this tutorial and my version of the code.  I strongly recommend this tutorial for Rails developers either just starting out or unsure how it all fits together.

I tried A LOT of resources and RoR stuff and I can say that this is the BEST and most complete tutorial I've ever seen. From 0 to deploy with no hassle, no headache. Just pure fun and good coding.

I'm not a "review guy" but this book really deserve it :)

Top notch books. This is THE book to learn ruby on rails from. Its very tough in some places and has a steep learning curve, but if you stick with it then there is no better resource to learn from

This book is amazing.

I jumped into this book pretty green as far as web development is concerned. I have a lot of experience on the front-end but had only dabbled on the back-end. I did have basic Ruby and Rails experience but nothing major. I really wanted to learn my way around Rails but also understand how and why things worked the way they did. This book really helped to answer those questions.

The first few chapters were a bit difficult to get through primarily because it was very basic information (configuration, Rails routing, REST, etc.). After that, it got really exciting (for me) as it dove into the specifics of the framework.

Ive been working through a lot of tutorials since I decided i want to pursue the career path of a web developer.

I have a broad but incomplete knowledge of coding and this book is giving me the confidence to join the dots.

Great content. Only concern, the book includes so many references to non ruby on rails commands eg. GIT, Unix that I felt like I had to stop and get a better understanding of the other components before continuing the lessons.

This tutorial was an excellent introduction to Ruby on Rails. The first several chapters were the most efficient job of ushering people into this forbidding territory that I've seen (and I've seen a few).

So why 4, not 5 stars? Well, despite the excellence at the beginning, the latter part of the book becomes (as many R on R tutorials do) a relentless march of "do this, then do that." The motivation behind the steps we're taking becomes less clear, and we understand less.

Having said that, it seems every R on R learning aid gets to that point sooner or later (I suspect it comes from a somewhat capricious model for the framework itself). Hartl's book gets there much later, and gave me a grounding in what goes into an R on R app. So I'm going to say a high-4.

Awesome tutorial! Came into this book knowing nothing about Ruby on Rails, and I must say you learn a ton with this book. Very informative, easy to follow information as you build a Twitter-like application.
